Post Wavelet Sharpen
Final Version in This post!

Wavelet sharpen
This Plugins brings the popular wavelet sharpening algorithmn to Bibble, when used with mild settings, it gives a really good sharpening effects, some users even claim that it can rescue out of focus shots.

Also, Wavelet Shapen brings a large radius Unsharpen Mask (USM)

A Small guideline on How to use it:

USM can be used for large radius sharpening and local contrast, personally i'm getting the best results with radii between 20 and 50, and very low amounts (20-40)

Sharpen 1 and Sharpen 2 do the same thing, but you can use different settings, a small radius gives razor sharp edges, but also tends to boost noise, a larger radius gives broader edges but also less noise.
Amount and Blend sliders work very similar, but not exactly the same, use Amount to get the effect you want and then Blend to tone it down until it fits your taste.

Reduce S+P is my quick & dirty Salt and Pepper filter, enable it if you notice that sharpen produces such artifacts.

Be gentle with the sliders, they go all up into the extreme values (Didn't want to limit you there)

Historic:
On Popular demand, a test release of my port of an other favorite gimp plugin, wavelet sharpen

It suffers the same drawbacks as my wavelet denoise plugin, but using some mild radius and strength should give a good effect.

I hope that it helps some long term gimp users like me ;)

I'm not seeing the tiling effects that I see with the Wavelet DeNoise plugin.

Please can you explain ?
Thanks.

its there, just very subtle

see the attached image with Amount = 100 and Radius = 20

It starts to appear as soon as you increase the radius

Great to see, both of these plugins are excellent in GIMP. Very unexpected and welcome to see a port.

I shan't install them for Bibble until the stupid tile-based limitation in Bibble has gone, though. Being that close yet foiled would be too frustrating!

Ok I see it (tiling) now. Its much more subtle with this plugin.

Hi there,

thank you very much for some nice plugin to "play" with.

Well, I played and the results are good. But, perhaps you have some better
starting-point for the "normal sharpening" vs. wavelet. Should the first be
turned off?

I know, I know... sharpening is more subjective and dependend on the detail-level
and camera-specific demosaicing-algorythm... :?

Thnx in @vance,

Oliver.

for me it depends on the image, wavelet sharpen create a different looking sharpness to my eye

Wavelet sharpening is a better way to fix slight out-of-focus blur than the unsharp mask (more than slight out-of-focus can't be resqued anyway). I will mostly be using this plug-in in layers/regions on parts that are most essential to the quality of an image, rather than the whole image itself. In most cases it will be just around the eye area of all living creatures.

Almost everything in an image can be unsharp and it can still look technically good, but even the slightest off-focus eyes will ruin an otherwise percect image.

I'm not sure where this plug-in is in the pipeline, but it should be applied before any other sharpening algorithms. Really looking forward to the new 5.1 and the possibilites the new SDK will open up for plug-ins like this. This plug-in will definately be a #1 alongside Pixie in every Bibble magician's first-aid-toolkit. 8) Roll on, 5.1 !!!

Post Re: Wavelet Sharpen - also a Test Version
I have posted some results with the test version of SPH_WaveletSharpen here.

This plug-in is much needed and is (as far as I know) free of any artefacts. At least at small radiuses. For my use I don't think I will need radiuses exceeding the 4 pixel limit of Bibble 5.0.3a, anyway.

I would like to propose some further improvements to the plug-in;

1. Decimal increments.
At least in the smaller radius range.

2. A slider to overlay the sharpening effect to the original unaltered image (if possible). I experimented a bit in Pshop with a sharpened image overlayed the blurred original. This gave a sharp and at the same time pleasantly smooth effect at 50% transperancy of the overlay. I'm not sure if it's at all possible to implement, but I think this possiblity to smooth out an sharpened image will give many images back some of the natural smoothness that the sharpening removes.

Anyway; A BIG THANKS for this much needed plug-in, Spoilerhead !!! :D 8)

I just tried it. It does give noticeable results with out of focus images that sharpening does not. Thanks a lot.
What is reduce S+P?

Its a basic Salt and Pepper reduction filter applied directly after the sharpening. I noticed that wavelet sharpening tends to generate some S&P style noise on high iso images, so i wrote a quick an dirty filter for it. on most images it shouldn't make any visible difference.

Also, its lacking a better name :D

I've attached a new version, mainly incorporating Arnfinns suggestions.

Looking for a Volunteer for the mac build. (Or a definitive way to cross compile)

I've just played with the Bibble 5.1 and am quite impressed. It's turned some very slightly soft pictures into very nice ones.

If this is what you've achieved in the test version I can't wait to see what the final release will do!
