Okay, this aint going to win any awards, but I am pretty impressed with what I could pull out of the raw.
My fill flash battery died, so I figured this shot was beyond saving. To my surprise I found that I was able to recover highlights and put some fill in. It took me a while to get the magenta out of the HR in the clouds, but -14 or so on the adjustments dialed it in.
I worked on this shot as much as I did because the person in it had specifically asked me to take this shot with the mountain behind him.

Okay. Funny, I must have inspired some people as a friend of mine felt she could do something with this file in NX and she asked for it too.
FWIW- I also clicked white on Pablo's shirt as it was a bit pink and I think it wasn't supposed to be, but then the parking lot color was shifted too. I guess it's trickier since he's in shadow and I don't remember the real color of his shirt. Did I mention I'm not feeling up to my usual 100%?
Glad you all enjoy a challenge!

Well I have some new toys I like to play with, and this seemed like a good example.
Here is what I was able to do with the image in about 15 minutes in B5. Would have been quicker, but the poly tool is still a bit crankier then I would like
Processed in the build of Bibble 5 going to Photokina and resized in Photoshop. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. What do you think? I would like to have spent some more time being more precise as there are a few edge halos I could have cleaned up, but I thikn You'll agree its a pretty "decent" save from what you started with, and in my biased opinion a at least a little better then your own effort.
Here is what I consider a nice portrait crop of it with a bit more resolution:
Give more time, I would have likly tried add a bit more contrast into the face area. In hind site, I had chosen bibble "Portait" look, and since it' a little flat ofr my liking, I probably would of gone with product or event which provide more default skin tone contrast
Details started with default settings, used highlight recovery too bring down the clounds, balane white balance for the background and through in some noise ninja and 0 sharpening. Used a little fill to bring up ths shadows in the pking lot to match pablo
Added A layer for pablo as a big rough poly with some filled in spots. Used aggressive exposure and fill light to bring up just the subject, gave this layer its own white balance an some black point to get contrast back in. Added in some sharpening and a little vibrance.
Added another small layer for his bandanna and hair, the first layer left them too flat, so I used another to bring some contrast back.
And a last layer to make his shades a bit more reflective.
Balanced overall sharpness and ev a bit , and of course did the second crop.
Image was downsampled for web display.
Overall I'm happy with the result. you?
Eric (Do I get a cookie?)
(And john lei if you are reading along, *THAT* is why you want to shoot raw)

Looks very good to me. That's tough to do - bring down the clouds a stop or two while bringing up Pablo three or four stops.

New tools indeed. Nicely done. The colors look dead on, and I was there so I should know
The foliage comment is also dead on, hadn't even thought about it. Good eye Lelek.
I agree with the crop too. If this wasn't anything more than a casual portrait I would get rid of the telephone pole coming out of his head and wires. Can you tell our shop is in an old building?
Oh, and I can't believe that I can actually see his EYES. That's pretty wild.
These people shots that I'm taking are for our shop, so they are really casual candid stuff. Still, I like to get out of each shot the best conversion I can. People shooting is really new to me, so this is a great way to learn.
I also learned to charge my batteries each night!
Thanx again,

Glad you like it rich.
Regarding color and tonal range....
Amongst the many details of B5 we'll be sharing shortly is that it includes a totally redone color pipeline. All supported cameras have been reprofiled for it, and the resulting improvements just have to be seen to be believed in many cases.
One of the cool things about it is that it handles tone mapping in a logrithmic space with a very broad dynamic range. This allows extremely precise control of tone, and when combined with our existing fill and HR tools can give some pretty spectacular Dynamic range...all with very little effort. A neat by product of that is that if there was lets say, perhaps a tone curve editor......it would allow you to work on tone curves that look very similar to traditional film HD curves all with the expected results....Hypothetically of course

Hopefully the Sony A700 is one of them since I have not been happy with the B4 version. I have to do more work with the images than I should to get them to look right.

Eric
Will the revised color pipeline fix the green conversion problems with some Canon cameras as highlighted in the Canon section?
If this ment creating a special tone curve that is OK.
Both Sebastian and myself have provided raw files so if some one could put one through B5 and give us a clue it would be much appreciated.

Yes it does, http://prescottcoffeeroasters.com/ which was put up before we bought the place. We haven't done much with it since then.

You still had to use Photoshop?
Personally, I've never been able to get a decent print from anything but Photoshop (prints from BibblePro 4 are yellow) but I've also never upgraded my Photoshop from version 7. I've been considering upgrading Photoshop to CS3 (if it's not too late now that CS4 is out). I've been holding out for Bibble 5 but do I still need Photoshop for decent resizing and printing?

Photoshop isn't necessary for this operation. Qimage will make the same task simpler and more confortable, without the need to calculate the dpi needed.

I have wished that b5 would have implemented some kind of outputsharpener option in connection with resizing, so that photoshop or other programs for resizing wouldn't be needed. So far I see no hint on this...
